Dynamics of Laughter: Mithrobarzanes’ Disguise as a Magos in Lucian’s Menippus

Amongst the many literary products of the Second Sophistic, few are so exuberant and satirical as those by Lucian of Samosata. In the comic dialogue known as the Menippus or Nekyomanteia (‘The Oracle of the Dead’), he narrates the attempt of the Cynic Menippus to consult with the prophet Tiresias in the underworld. In order to descend into Hades, Menippus needs the guidance of the disciples of Zoroaster, the μάγοι, and he finds his guide in Mithrobarzanes, a Chaldean from Babylon (Nec.6). After some preliminary rituals, Mithrobarzanes prepares Menippus for the katabasis by means of a comic disguise: Menippus has to wear a woollen hat, hold a lyre, and gear himself up with a lion skin to pass for Odysseus, Orpheus, or Herakles (Nec.7). With such description, Lucian trivialises the figures of these mythical heroes on the wake of a well-established comic tradition (e.g. Aristoph. Batr.46-7;495-6). In this study, I argue that Mithrobarzanes’ garments (Nec.8) have a comic value as well, and this is due to the fact that he is not a real μάγος, but a Chaldean from Babylon who needs to wear a μαγική στολή (‘Magian stole’) to disguise himself as a μάγος. To support this interpretation, I shall discuss some key passages (i.e. Apul. Apol.25.9-26.6; Philostr. V.A.1.2;1.26; Hist.Alex.Mag. rec.vet. 1.4.3-4;3.30.6; Hsch. s.v. Χαλδαῖοι) clarifying the meaning of μάγος and Χαλδαῖος, and their semantic association with the term γόης (‘enchanter’). This will allow us to understand that, by means of Mithrobarzanes’ costume, Lucian aims to satirise the figure of the Zoroastrian high priests. This study aims, therefore, to shed light on the hilarious connotation of Mithrobarzanes’ disguise as a μάγος, which will enable us to recover an additional farcical note of Lucian’s Nekyomanteia

EAPC task force on education for psychologists in palliative care

    Get PDF
It is argued that psychological aspects of care and psychosocial problems are essential components of palliative care. However, the provision of appropriate services remains somewhat arbitrary. Unlike medical and nursing care, which are clearly delivered by doctors and nurses respectively, psychological and psychosocial support in palliative care are not assigned exclusively to psychologists. It is generally expected that all professionals working in palliative care should have some knowledge of the psychological dynamics in terminal illness, as well as skills in communication and psychological risk assessment. On the one hand, palliative care education programmes for nurses and doctors comprise a considerable amount of psychological and psychosocial content. On the other hand, only a few palliative care associations provide explicit information on the role and tasks of psychologists in palliative care. Psychologists’ associations do not deal much with this issue either. If they refer to it at all, it is in the context of the care of the aged, end-of-life care or how to deal with grief

A longer XMM-Newton look at I Zwicky 1: Distinct modes of X-ray spectral variability

The short-term spectral variability of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy I Zwicky 1 (I Zw 1) as observed in an 85 ks XMM-Newton observation is discussed in detail. I Zw 1 shows distinct modes of variability prior to and after a flux dip in the broad-band light curve. Before the dip the variability can be described as arising from changes in shape and normalisation of the spectral components. Only changes in normalisation are manifested after the dip. The change in the mode of behaviour occurs on dynamically short timescales in I Zw 1. The data suggest that the accretion-disc corona in I Zw 1 could have two components that are co-existing. The first, a uniform, physically diffuse plasma responsible for the "typical'' long-term (e.g. years) behaviour; and a second compact, centrally located component causing the rapid flux and spectral changes. This compact component could be the base of a short or aborted jet as sometimes proposed for radio-quiet active galaxies. Modelling of the average and time-resolved rms spectra demonstrate that a blurred Compton-reflection model can describe the spectral variability if we allow for pivoting of the continuum component prior to the dip.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures. The skulls of Borgo Cerreto (Perugia): medical, surgical, and anatomical activity of Baronio Vincenzi (XVII century)

In the Sixties of the last century the vault of a 17th century private chapel was opened, revealing three isolated skulls with evidence of surgical and anatomical activity. The chapel was built by Baronio Vincenzi, who lived and practiced medicine in Borgo Cerreto, a village in the province of Perugia, between the 16th and the 17th century. The skull bc 01 belongs to an adult male, aged 25-35 years. It shows a hole on the left front-parietal region (30 x 31 mm), that can be identified as the result of a skull trepanation. The margins of the lesion are regularly smoothed and inclined internally and the diplopic tissues result almost completely obliterated by a cicatricial bone. A bone splinter (10 x 8 mm), completely reabsorbed, can be observed on the right side of the hole. These findings are the proof of a long survival of the subject. X-ray examination confirms a regular process of ossification, without infection. Trepanation was performed with a Hippocratic trypanon, largely used in cranial surgery of Modern Age. The specimen bc 02 is without skullcap and the right upper part of the face; it belongs to an adult male, 25-30 years aged. The cuts were produced by a bone saw with a thin blade. The choice of these regions suggests the willingness to study the basal skull, the right eye cavity and the paranasal sinuses. The skull bc 03 consists only in a skullcap of an adult individual, which shows the signs of a bone saw. In conclusion, the recovery of a trepanned skull, at present the first specimen of this type recovered so far in Umbria, together with two others skulls with the signs of postmortem examination, inside the Vincenzi family vault can be probably related to the professional activity of Baronio. He was an experienced surgeon and a skilled anatomist, who certainly experienced the empirical surgery of the nearby surgical School of Preci, famous throughout Europe for the treatment of urinary bladder stones, cataract as well as the ability in skull trepanation

Chandra imaging of the ∼\simkpc extended outflow in 1H 0419-577

The Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0419-577 hosts a ∼\simkpc extended outflow that is evident in the [\ion{O}{iii}] image and that is also detected as a warm absorber in the UV/X-ray spectrum. Here, we analyze a ∼\sim30 ks Chandra-ACIS X-ray image, with the aim of resolving the diffuse extranuclear X-ray emission and of investigating its relationship with the galactic outflow. Thanks to its sub-arcsecond spatial resolution, Chandra resolves the circumnuclear X-ray emission, which extends up to a projected distance of at least ∼\sim16 kpc from the center. The morphology of the diffuse X-ray emission is spherically symmetrical. We could not recover a morphological resemblance between the soft X-ray emission and the ionization bicone that is traced by the [\ion{O}{iii}] outflow. we argue that the photoionized gas nebula must be distributed mostly along the polar directions, outside our line of sight. In this geometry, the X-ray/UV warm absorber must trace a different gas component, physically disconnected from the emitting gas, and located closer to the equatorial plane.Comment: accepted for publications A&

    An X-ray view of Mrk 705: A borderline narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy

Mrk 705 exhibits optical properties of both narrow- and broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. We examine the X-ray properties of this borderline object utilising proprietary and public data from Chandra, ASCA, ROSAT and RXTE, spanning more than twelve years. Though long-term flux variability from the pointed observations appears rather modest (about 3 times), we do find examples of rare large amplitude outbursts in the RXTE monitoring data. There is very little evidence of long-term spectral variability as the low- and high-energy spectra appear constant with time. A 6.4 keV emission line is detected in the ASCA spectra of Mrk 705, but not during the later, higher flux state Chandra observation. However, the upper limit on the equivalent width of a line in the Chandra spectrum is consistent with a constant-flux emission line and a brighter continuum, suggesting that the line is emitted from distant material such as the putative torus. Overall, the X-ray properties of Mrk 705 appear typical of BLS1 activity.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A (Research Note

XMM-Newton observation of the ULIRG NGC 6240: The physical nature of the complex Fe K line emission

We report on an XMM-Newton observation of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240. The 0.3-10 keV spectrum can be successfully modelled with: (i) three collisionally ionized plasma components with temperatures of about 0.7, 1.4, and 5.5 keV; (ii) a highly absorbed direct power-law component; and (iii) a neutral Fe K_alpha and K_beta line. We detect a significant neutral column density gradient which is correlated with the temperature of the three plasma components. Combining the XMM-Newton spectral model with the high spatial resolution Chandra image we find that the temperatures and the column densities increase towards the center. With high significance, the Fe K line complex is resolved into three distinct narrow lines: (i) the neutral Fe K_alpha line at 6.4 keV; (ii) an ionized line at about 6.7 keV; and (iii) a higher ionized line at 7.0 keV (a blend of the Fe XXVI and the Fe K_beta line). While the neutral Fe K line is most probably due to reflection from optically thick material, the Fe XXV and Fe XXVI emission arises from the highest temperature ionized plasma component. We have compared the plasma parameters of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240 with those found in the local starburst galaxy NGC 253. We find a striking similarity in the plasma temperatures and column density gradients, suggesting a similar underlying physical process at work in both galaxies.Comment: 8 pages including 9 figures.
